Dyslexia

What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a common learning difference that affects how individuals process language. It can impact reading, writing, and spelling abilities.

Children with dyslexia are just as intelligent as their peers but may struggle with traditional learning methods due to differences in the way their brains interpret written words and sounds.

Warning Signs

Every student is unique and may present various warning signs that may signal they need further investigation.

⚠️ Difficulty learning sound-symbol correspondences.

⚠️ Difficulty reading words.

⚠️ Does not have word attack skills.

⚠️ Makes wild guesses at words and relies heavily on the context or pictures to “read.”

⚠️ May need to decode the same word even if it appears multiple times in a passage.

⚠️ Reading is monotone, lacking punctuation.

⚠️ Spells phonetically without applying spelling rules or patterns.

⚠️ Inserts extra letters or deletes letters in a word.

⚠️ Tendency to use different spellings for the same word.

⚠️ May be able to spell the words on a spelling test but then misspells the same words in other writing.

⛔️
If you notice any of these, take action and see why your child may be struggling.
